McMichael vs. Rockingham football game

McMichael meets Rockingham Co. in a huge rivalry game tonight.  McMichael started the day right w/ a pep rally at 6:00am that was televised on local news channel WFMY News 2 Good Morning Show.

That evening the EV team headed up the hill to the football game entrance where many folks stopped by to see the EV and what the students have done.

McMichael students headed back to Charlotte after the close of the DNC 2012. Upon arrival students found the "electric fox" fully reconstructed by the Phillip O. Berry students and ready to be plugged into the charging station at Discovery Place. The car had been converted to be used with a J1772 plug that is compatible w/ the Discovery Place charging station. Afterwards students enjoyed the sites of Discovery Place and their interactive exhibits. Some of the Discovery Place employees took the students "behind the scenes" to see how the exhibits are created. Next the EV will go under an inspection and then goes back under the knife as more students will be learning about electricity and alternative energies.

EV Challenge 2012

The 2012 EV Team

On April 21st and 22nd the McMichael EV Team went to the EV Challenge to compete in the final event. This year going into the Challenge we were more prepared than last year because we had spent so much time teaching and helping each student learn a specific area of the challenge which really diversified the team.

Tyler Haney and Eli Strickland on the new event EV Jeopardy.
This was one of the First Events of the day and kept going for most of the day. The Jeopardy Event let students test their knowledge of  the history and mechanics of Electric Vehicles. In round one we had the highest score letting us go to round two but then we ended up drawing for second in the second round we were only two questions away from first.

Dylan in the Technical Inspection
Dylan stepped up for our team in this event where you show off your knowledge of Ev's and your own car. He showed off his great knowledge of the Electric Fox to the judges telling them about how we built the car from the ground up with all of our technical innovations and many other things about the car.

Spencer and Clinton Troubleshooting
Spencer put a lot of work into learning all of the questions he had to know along with building a replica of the troubleshooting board for extra practice. Clinton didn't really even know he had to do this until the event but put in some quick last minute studying to help out Spencer as much as could.

Clinton and Dylan driving in the Range Event

This event was a little choppy considering we were the only car class in the whole event this year. to help us with this they tried giving us an advantage with the range and a disadvantage to autocross. This was based on the scores from last year in comparison to the truck class which we were bench marked against during the driving portion of the events. After all was said and done we didn't do so hot in this event but we did our best and look to improving in the future.

Quinton driving in the rainy Autocross

This event was difficult for all the teams because of the constant rain on Saturday. Most of our team was very tired at this point because of the rain that we slept through while camping at the event. However we did our best in the final event of the challenge even though the the track was very difficult to traverse with all of the rain and the 180 degree turn which our car couldn't handle very well.

The EV Challenge was very fun this year and we defiantly we be making modifications to the car and hopefully returning next year to do even better than this year. Here are some other pictures from the 2012 EV Challenge.

Getting ready for the EV Challenge

Here at McMichael were making some final changes and modifications to the car before the EV Challenge tomorrow. We have been working very hard to make the car as good as possible for this year. We are changing the 92' dashboard to an 82' dashboard and even though they are the same model they have many differences and we are having to custom make some parts.

One of our sponsors Victory Chevrolet has let us borrow a Chevy Tahoe to take to the EV Challenge.

The EV Challenge this year is being held at the NCCAR facility in Garysburg NC and consist of many high school teams making Ev's just like us. They have added some new events to the final challenge this year such as acceleration and a jeopardy challenge. Our students are hard at work studying up on the knowledge of electric vehicles, such as Nathan Connor on his oral presentation and Eli Strickland and Tyler Haney working on the EV jeopardy event. Wish us luck as we go to NCCAR and take on the EV Challenge!
